Month by Month, Crowd by Crowd

A weekend is short enough that one heatwave or one festival crowd can define it. Use this page to pick a month that matches the weekend you want.

Four seasons, four kinds of weekend

spring

The all-rounder season

Seville and Lisbon are at their best. Bologna's markets fill with asparagus and artichokes. Prague gardens open in April.

summer

Go north

Copenhagen's harbour baths open and daylight lasts past 22:00 around midsummer. Southern cities slow down in the heat.

autumn

The connoisseur's choice

Crowds thin, prices soften, light turns golden. Bologna eats its best food of the year; Seville cools to pleasant warmth.

winter

Cosy, short, lamplit

Prague and Copenhagen glow in December with markets and candlelight. Lisbon stays mild, though rain is common.

Reading the crowd calendar

School holidays drive crowds more than weather. Easter weekends are busy everywhere, and in Seville Holy Week turns the old town into a procession route; it is extraordinary, but hotel prices rise sharply and moving around becomes slow. The April Fair follows two weeks later. If you want either, book months ahead. If you do not, avoid those weeks entirely.

Prague's peak runs from June to August and again during the Christmas markets on Old Town and Wenceslas Squares. Copenhagen is busiest in July, when many Danes are themselves away, which leaves a tourist-heavy centre. Lisbon fills in June during the Festas de Lisboa, when Alfama smells of grilled sardines and the night of 12 June becomes one long street party.

Bologna has a quieter crowd pattern but large trade fairs at BolognaFiere can fill hotels on specific weeks. Check the fair calendar before booking. August is the opposite problem: many family-run trattorias close for the holidays.

Light and weather in a 48-hour window

On a weekend, daylight hours matter more than temperature. In December, Copenhagen has only around seven hours of daylight, so plan museums and candlelit cafés rather than long walks. In June, Seville can be scorching by noon but beautiful after nine at night. Lisbon has the gentlest climate of the five and works in almost any month, provided you pack a light rain layer between November and March.
